WHAT IS MARCELLUS SHALE?

The Marcellus Shale is a black shale rock formation covering approximately 2/3 of Pennsylvania as well as parts of West Virginia, Ohio and New York. Recent technological advances in drilling have allowed companies to tap this previously ignored resource. Scientists estimate that the Marcellus Shale formation may contain up to 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas across its entirety.
